Don't Look Up (2021): Two astronomers detect a comet headed towards Earth and can't convince anyone to care. Of course, half of America consider it Fake News. A satire that doesn't quite land because today's reality is satire. If it hits, we'll deserve it. Loaded with stars. B-

Thinking about why I thought the satire in "Don't Look Up" doesn't quite land, whereas "Dr. Strangelove" is a classic 57 years after it was made, I think it's because the mood of the country is so different now than in 1964. The Cuban missile crisis was fresh in people's minds. JFK had just been assassinated 2 months before. Vietnam was still in the future. Americans still respected politicians and generals. That is what gave Dr. Strangelove its bite. That mood doesn't exist today, making it hard to produce biting satire that doesn't just rehash the daily news.
