Flashback Fourth - 2017
A year ago, Ellen and I watched the fireworks from the eleventh floor of Clements Hospital near downtown Dallas. We were hopeful and anxious, as I imagine the Founders were on our nation's first celebration of independence in 1776, when the outcome of the grand experiment was still unknown.
For days before and after the Fourth, Ellen was weak and at times feverish and/or nauseous, the result of chemotherapy and radiation that killed off her diseased immune system. A bone marrow transplant was completed, but the new stem cells had not yet had time to engraft in Ellen. And so we waited, and watched silently through the hospital window.
A lot has happened since then, almost all of it good. We'll be watching this year's fireworks from lawn chairs in Richardson's Breckinridge Park, site of the annual Family Fourth Celebration. All is right with the world.
