More after the jump.

Isfahan, Iran, was once one of the world's largest cities, the capital of the great Persian empire from 1598 until 1722, when it was sacked by Afghan invaders. (It seems like Afghanistan has been a problem for centuries.)

In the heart of Isfahan is Imam Square, 550 yards long by 170 yards wide. It's surrounded by mosques, palaces and the grand bazaar. It's truly one of the world's great spaces, then and now. One can understand why Persians had a saying, "Isfahan is half the world."
