Fatal Shooting Outside Ice Rink

A man was fatally shot Sunday night outside an ice rink in Richardson, Texas. Three people are being questioned.

"It looks all of them knew each other and had been together earlier in the night," [Richardson Police Department spokesman Sgt. Kevin] Perlich says. A fight broke out, he says, though "over what it's not totally clear yet. We have two, three different versions of what took place, but we're sorting through it. But there is no other threat out there for the public to be concerned about."

This was probably just a little careless wording on Sgt. Perlich's part. He probably meant to say something like, "this particular shooting does not pose an ongoing threat to the public."

There's a 20-year-old man dead of a gunshot wound. Two other men and a woman are being questioned. Allegedly they all knew each other. It happened at a public place in Richardson, a recreation center, an ice skating rink.

Given all that, I don't believe for a moment that there are no other threats out there for me to be concerned about. How many other people are carrying guns, ready and willing to settle arguments by gun shot? Or maybe just recklessly handling them such that accidental shootings of friends or bystanders happen?

Let's face it. Gun violence is endemic in the United States. If you want some idea of how many other threats are out there, follow David Frum on Twitter. Since the Newtown gun massacre, he has been highlighting day by day the death toll from gun violence in America. He has also been offering suggestions of what can be done to slow it down, whether the NRA and Congress want to be part of the solution or part of the problem. David Frum is a center-right conservative Republican who was a special assistant to President George W. Bush from 2001 to 2002 and is now a contributing editor to Newsweek.

What I do *not* recommend you read is yesterday's blog post, "Texas, Guns, and Politics." Given this latest shooting this close to home, it's too discouraging.
