OTBR: A House Decorated for Christmas in Quebec

Latitude: N 46° 28.758
Longitude: W 071° 32.688
A child on a road trip with his family asks, "Where are we?" and the father answers, "Let's check the map. We're off the blue roads [the Interstate Highways marked in blue on the road atlas]. We're off the red roads [the US and state highways]. We're off the black roads [the county highways]. I think we're off the map altogether." It was always my dream to be off the map altogether.

After the jump, a few of the random places (and I mean random literally) that I visited vicariously last month that are "off the blue roads".

  • in Quebec, in a field behind an old wooden barn on Rue Saint-Joseph, near a colorful house decorated for Christmas
  • in Estonia, in brush, not far from the highest hill of Saaremaa island ("beautiful white fresh snow everywhere and chilly -10C")
  • in underbrush up a hill south of North Brother in New South Wales ("not the best day to head off into the wild, as it was hot and sticky")
  • in Minnesota, west of a snow packed gravel road in birch and aspen woods ("a fine sunny day, but a little on the cool side, reaching -11C in the afternoon")
  • in the UK, in a field between a new industrial park and a housing estate ("black ice everywhere")
  • in Iowa, at the base of a hill on a snowy unplowed minimum maintenance road covered in 2 foot snow drifts ("the harvested fields are covered in sparkly white snow")
  • in Victoria, Australia, on a beautiful rural property surrounded by rolling green hills ("several brown and white horses grazing contentedly on the lush grass")
  • in Arkansas, in open farm fields up and over a levee near a big looping bend of the Mississippi River
  • in Missouri, at the bottom of a bluff overlooking the Mississippi River in Bee Tree Park
  • down a dirt road in New York, with several log homes on it, including one with two large "Seasons Greetings" banners hung from trees
  • in rural Quebec, in scrubby pine woods that line both sides of the road
  • in the southern California desert, several kilometers down dirt roads and past a couple of Joshua trees
  • in Delaware, just off the driveway to the right of a two-story white house ("Couldn't see a lot of details in the fog, but the mailbox was white, and there was a silver car in the driveway.")
  • unreachable, about 700 meters on fire roads from northern California's Pulgas Water Temple, which is part of the 1930's era water project that provides water to San Francisco from the Yosemite area 160 miles away
  • on the edge of a limestone quarry in the far west of Chicago
  • and southeast of Houston, in a video repair van parked in front of one of those rent-a-business places that look like storage lockers
