What's your standard for excellence? How about the University of Wisconsin-Madison's Memorial Union Terrace on Lake Mendota on a Friday afternoon in summer? If there is a finer single place to be on any university campus anywhere, I haven't seen it. Add a brat and a beer and nowhere else comes close.

If there ever was a place to distract one from studies, this was it. My grad school library was in Helen White next to the Union. That library had wall to wall and floor to ceiling windows overlooking the lake. Then there was the Union Terrace and the siren songs of beer and an even better view next door.

My favorite place to study was in the Helen C. White Library. Specifically, on the top floor, plunked down in one of those big, comfy chairs by those wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the lake. In any season, in any weather, look up from whatever book you had to read and you had one of the best views anywhere. Thanks for bringing back the memory.
